Welcome to your site... If you found the world of boxing didn't fit you quite like a glove at first, we're here to tell you to take heart. Boxing is a sport on the move- the fastest growing sport for women in the UK!
We are now able to look forward with real expectation to women's boxing being included in the London Olympics in 2012 and girls are gradually changing the image of boxing both in the gym and the ring.
Contrary to the stereotypes often associated with boxing, most female boxers are intelligent, well educated, attractive, hard-working and equipped to be excellent ambassadors for their sport.
At Boxergirl.net we get the chance to show the world who we are!
So why get involved?
The recent growth in popularity of women's boxing may owe some thanks to movies such as Million Dollar Baby and slowly changing media attitudes. But we here at Boxergirl believe that a sustainable increase in participation and improvement in opportunties will only come about if female boxers themselves pull together to make change happen. That means promoting the sport at every opportunity, keeping in touch with other boxergirls and helping new beginners.
Most female boxers have struggled to find
training, get bouts and to feel accepted in a traditionally male world. Many have, sadly, given up in frustration. But the tide is now turning and with more exchange between
the UK and Europe (where women's boxing is given far greater publicity and respect), the sport is sure to move forward in leaps and bounds in the next few years.
The birth of Boxergirl
Boxergirl is both a persona and a website born out of long-felt frustration and, eventually, determination that "no, you're a girl" was not an acceptable answer!
Having experienced first hand the many intentional and unintended obstacles placed before women wanting to make boxing a serious sporting career, the founder of Boxergirl conceived the website in late 2004 as a way of breaking down boundaries and allowing boxergirls to help themselves rather than relying on others.
Knowledge is power and therefore Boxergirl is first and foremost an information source; it is also a match-making tool, a communication portal and a way to promote and celebrate our sport.
Boxergirl is here to bring female boxers out of the dark and into the spot-light they deserve.
So get involved, whatever level you are! Tell your boxing friends and opponents to sign up, make posts to the Gossip Forum, tell us about your up-coming bouts and keep your profile up to date.
Boxergirl isn't just for experienced boxers; it's for everyone in training or with an interest in this exciting, dramatic, challenging sport.
Keep your chin down and your guard up... and most importantly, TAKE COURAGE!
